Vistalux Corrugated PVC Roof Sheet Installation Guides

Storing PVC Roofing Sheets Before Use: Storage indoors on a flat dry surface in cool surroundings is preferable. When outdoor storage is unavoidable, store flat on wooden bearers spaced at about 1m (3’ 3”) centres and cover completely with an opaque light coloured tarpaulin. Stacked sheets left uncovered in direct sunlight will distort due to solar heat gain in the stack and we will not be able to offer free of charge replacements.

1. Preparation

For a Car Port or Lean Too installation you will need:
  • Vistalux PVC Roofing Sheet
  • Vistalux PVC Roof Flashing
  • Vistalux PE Eaves Filler
  • Vistalux Super Fixings
  • Flashing Tape

A minimum slope of 5 degrees is essential in any structure to ensure water run-off (10 degrees or more is better)

2. Cutting Sheets

Arrange the sheets loosely on the roof, mark hole positions and any necessary saw cuts with a felt tip pen.
Sheets should overhang the roof by 60mm to allow rainfall to run-off into the gutter and should be wide enough to cover the barge board at the side.
If cutting is required use an angle grinder with a metal slitting blade or fine tooth saw at a shallow angle with light pressure. Support the sheet to minimise vibrations.
A good tip when cutting is to sandwich the sheet between other sheets with the part to be removed protruding.
If a sheet has to be cut to a finished width, make the cut in the slope of the corrugated sheet.
Avoid drilling and cutting sheets in very cold weather. Warm sheets will be less prone to damage. If possible store sheets in a warm room before cutting.

3. Drilling Sheets

Pre-drill sheets before fixing. Please note - holes for fixings must be drilled larger than the fixing to allow for expansion. Typically 10mm for a 3mm sheet.
Drill sheets singly with a masonary bit using a low speed drill and light pressure. Support the sheet securely under each hole position when drilling.
There should be at least 5 fixings per support across the width of the sheet.

4. Flashing

Vistalux wall flashing to match the sheet corrugation is installed at the top of the slope. The Wall Flashing is fixed firmly into position with Butyl wall flashing tape to form a watertight seal between the sheet and the wall.

5. Fixing

Start fixing the sheets.
Ariel foam fillers are used under the sheets at all support positions to prevent roof 'chatter' and to support the sheets when fixed.
Use Ariel screws, caps and washers to secure the sheet: the screw is sufficently tight when the washer under its head can just be rotated with the finger and thumb.

6. Joining Sheets (end to end)

If sheets need to be joined end to end, ensure an overlap of at least 150mm for a 10 degree slope or 300mm for a 5 degree slope.
Use a strip of Butyl Sealing Tape to prevent dust and dirt getting between the sheets.

How to install a PVC Carport

Vistalux PVC Corrugated Roofing Sheets Frequently Asked Questions

What is a corrugated roof sheet?

A corrugated roofing sheet is a type of roofing material shaped into a series of parallel ridges and grooves, or put simply, has a wavy look. This design gives the sheet strength and durability (which gives it an advantage over flat sheets) while also allowing for easy drainage of rainwater. They come in a range of sizes and profiles, allowing for flexibility in design and installation.

The Vistalux range includes three types of corrugation: 3-inch, 6-inch, and Iron 8/3 profile. The 3-inch profile has a measurement of 72.32mm (peak to peak), while the 6-inch profile measures 146.54mm (peak to peak). The Iron 8/3 profile matches asbestos profile. Please consult the technical drawing for further clarification.

In addition to the Vistalux range, the Corolux range by Ariel Plastics offers the mini profile corrugated sheet, which has a much smaller peak-to-peak measurement of 31.72mm.

Which types of applications are suitable for PVC sheets?

Vistalux corrugated roofing sheets can be used for a wide range of applications, such as roofing and cladding installations, including porches, canopies, cloches, cold-frames, side cladding, garden sheds, lean-to extensions, covered walkways, plant houses, roof lights and carports.

How do I determine which profile is suitable for my roof?

When selecting a profile for your roof, it's essential to consider the nature of your project. Corolux mini-profile and Vistalux 3-inch sheets are ideal for domestic projects. The 3-inch profile is a popular choice as it fits perfectly into old asbestos roofs and is excellent for replacement and refurbishment jobs. On the other hand, the 6-inch profile is primarily used for industrial or agricultural purposes, such as warehouses, factories, or larger roofs. Therefore, it's vital to choose a profile that matches the size and intended use of your structure.

Are there varying thicknesses available for PVC corrugated roofing sheets?

Yes Vistalux roofing sheets are available in different thicknesses, Please refer to the information below:
3 Inch Corrugated PVC Roof Sheet: This sheet comes in three different thicknesses: 0.8mm (lightweight), 1.1mm (heavy duty), and 1.3mm (super weight).
6 Inch Corrugated PVC Roof Sheet: This sheet is available only in one thickness, which is 1.3mm (super weight).
8/3 Profile Corrugated PVC Roof Sheet: This sheet has a thickness of 1.1mm (heavy duty).
Mini Profile Corrugated PVC Roof Sheet: This sheet is 0.8mm thick (lightweight) and is available in either translucent or clear.

What are the available widths and lengths of corrugated PVC roofing sheets?

The width and length sizes of each profile of corrugated PVC roofing sheets may vary. To make things clearer, the length of a sheet runs down into the gutter. Please refer to the information below:

3 Inch Corrugated PVC Roof Sheets (Lightweight): This sheet has a width of 762mm (cover width of 651mm), and varying lengths ranging from 1,830mm (6ft) to 3,050mm (10ft).

3 Inch Corrugated PVC Roof Sheet (Heavy Duty & Super weight): This sheet is 762mm wide (cover width of 651mm), and varying lengths ranging from 1,525mm (5ft) to 3,660mm (12ft).

6 Inch Corrugated PVC Roof Sheet (Super weight): This sheet is 1,086mm wide (cover width of 1016mm), and varying lengths ranging from 1,525mm (5ft) to 3,660mm (12ft).

8/3 Profile Corrugated PVC Roof Sheet (Heavy Duty): This sheet is 660mm wide (cover width of 608mm), and varying lengths ranging from 1,830mm (6ft) to 3,050mm (10ft).

Mini Profile Corrugated PVC Roof Sheet (Lightweight): This sheet is 662mm wide (cover width of 603mm), and varying lengths ranging from 1,830mm (6ft) to 3,050mm (10ft).

For more detailed information on the different profiles and their sizes, please refer to the individual product descriptions.

What is meant by 'cover width'?

This is the width of the sheet after they have been overlapped by one corrugation, which is the manufacturer’s recommendation.

How do I calculate the number of corrugated PVC roof sheets required to cover my roof?

To determine the number of sheets required, you first need to calculate how many sheets are needed widthways (left to right). Divide the roof's width (in mm) by the sheet's cover width, always rounding up to the next sheet. For instance, if the answer is 7.3, round it up to 8 sheets.

For example, suppose you're using Vistalux 3-inch profile sheets with a cover width of 651mm, and your roof's width is 6 metres (6,000mm). In that case, you'll need 10 sheets because 6,000mm/651mm = 9.21(rounding up to 10 sheets required).
Next, you need to ensure that you have a sheet long enough lengthways (running down into the gutter) for your roofing project. If your roof is longer than the available sheet size (12ft or 10ft in some cases), you'll need to overlap the sheets sufficiently to cover the entire area. The recommended minimum overlap distance is 150mm for a 10-degree slope or 300mm for a 5-degree pitch.

If you find this calculation confusing, we recommend contacting one of our friendly team members for assistance in determining the number of sheets you require.

How do I determine the number of fixings needed for my Vistalux roof sheets?

To calculate the required number of fixings, you can follow these steps:
  • Divide the roof length by the support centres and add one.
  • Divide the roof width by the fixing centres.
  • Multiply the values obtained in step 1 and step 2 together.
Alternatively, an average of 20 fixings per sheet is a good rule of thumb.

What degree pitch do I require when installing the corrugated PVC roofing sheets?

A minimum slope of 5 degrees is essential in any structure to ensure water run-off (10 degrees or more is better).

What PVC flashing is needed to fit the roof sheets?

The PVC flashing required depends on the profile of the sheet. For instance, Mini Profile requires Mini Profile Clear Wall Flashing, 3 inch requires 3-inch corrugated PVC Clear Wall Flashing, and Iron 8/3 Profile requires Iron 8/3 PVC Clear Wall Flashing. Flashing is not available for 6-inch sheets, as they are not commonly used for a lean-to.

Do Vistalux PVC sheets come with a warranty?

Ariel Plastics Ltd will replace any Vistalux PVC Sheet that is proven to have failed due to a manufacturing defect in normal climatic conditions for ten years from the purchase date. This warranty is only valid if the Vistalux has been fixed according to the manufacturer's instructions. Re-erections or consequential damage costs are not included. This warranty does not affect customers' statutory rights.

What does the 'asbestos' aspect refer to in these plastic roof sheets?

This sheet mirrors the old Asbestos 3" profile sheets, but it is made from PVC with no asbestos present.

Can I install the PVC roofing sheets myself?

Yes. You can easily cut, drill, and install the sheet with standard DIY tools. However, it is recommended that two people perform the job or a skilled professional.

How do I install PVC sheets?

Please refer to our Corrugated PVC Sheet Installation Guide for installation instructions.

Why is there a minimum order requirement for corrugated roofing sheets?

Anything less than five sheets has a higher chance of breaking in transit. We would like to avoid this risk, which is why we have a minimum order quantity requirement of five sheets. You can mix different sizes to reach the minimum order requirement.

Is an overhang necessary for Vistalux corrugated roofing sheets?

Yes, an overhang of at least 60mm is recommended to enable rainfall to run-off into the gutter effectively. The sheets should also be wide enough to cover the barge board on the side. If cutting is required, please use an angle grinder with a metal slitting blade or a fine-tooth saw at a shallow angle with light pressure.

How do i store my corrugated PVC Roof Sheets before installation?

Storage indoors on a flat dry surface in cool surroundings is preferable.
