Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the Tapco Slates made out of?
A: Tapco Slates are manufactured from a blend of limestone and virgin polypropylene, and are made from multiple natural patterns. TapcoSlate is not made from recycled materials but can be recycled at the end of its long lifespan.

Q: What roof pitch can the tapco slates be fitted to?
A:
Tested to BBA approval on roof pitches of 14° to 70° on both felt & batten and fully-boarded roofing applications (a minimum pitch of 20° is needed for quaried slate)

Q: How heavy is a square meter of tapco slate?
A:
TapcoSlate Classic can weigh as little as 12kg per square metre, which is ideal for structures needing a light footprint or with older timbers that cannot take heavier-weight roofing tiles

Q: How Should I Store Tapco Slate Roof Tiles?
A:
Tapco slates need to be stored on the original pallet on a flat surface. Proper storage of the product at the job site is important. Classic slates are cambered to ensure that maximum pressure is transferred to the leading edge of the slate during installation and should be stacked face down (as originally delivered). Do not double stack pallets.

Q: Is The Tapco Slate Tiles Recyclable
A:
TapcoSlate is 100% recyclable, but is not marked with a recycling symbol/logo and so the contractor should contact a local recycler to make the necessary arrangements, stating that the product is "mineral-filled Polypropylene" plastic. If there is any difficulty in locating a recycling facility, please contact us. Note that skip companies will send the product to the correct recycler.

Q: Do the tapco slates require any special tools to fit?
A:
No special tools are required to fit tapco synthetic slates (see tools below)
• Hand fastened (hammered or screwed) or fastened with a nail/screw gun.
• Sharp utility blade or a standard circular saw.
• Tape measure, pry bar, tin snips.
• Chalk line with blue chalk (do not use red chalk as this can stain the product).

Q: What Roof Decking Materials are recommened with Tapco roof slates?
A:
A Minimum of 23/32" (18mm) plywood decking, solid wood decking, or oriented strand board (OSB).

Q: What Roofing membrane/underlay should be used with tapco slate?
A:
TapcoSlate Classic roofing slates are classed as insufficiently air-open products and therefore, following the guidance within BS 5250, a vapour impermeable (HR) roof membrane/underlay should be used. Tapco Roofing Products recommends Protect Wunderlay for TapcoSlate Classic.

Q:Should there be a spacing inbetween the slates?
A:
0.25" (6mm) spacer tabs are provided on every Classic slate to aid in maintaining consistent spacing. The spacers will allow for any movement of the roof deck and expansion/contraction of the slate (although thermal expansion is highly unlikely in European climates). DO NOT remove the spacer tabs unless finishing at the end of the course.

Q: Are these slates covered by a warranty?
A:
Tapco Slate has a 40 year warranty.

Q: How do I cut tapco slate?
A:
Tapco Slate Classic can be easily scored with a standard utility knife and snapped down the line, alternatively it can be cut and shaped with a standard plastics saw or power jigsaw
